Man arrested in Norwich for shooting at empty car

Norwich — Police arrested a Willimantic man for repeatedly firing at an unoccupied car parked off Old Canterbury Turnpike this morning in what they are characterizing as a domestic dispute.

Carlos M. Ortiz, 35. of 61 Keating St., Willimantic, was charged with three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, one count of risk of injury to a minor, one count of first-degree criminal mischief, one count of unlawful discharge of a firearm and two counts of carrying a pistol without a permit.

Ortiz was later treated and released at Windham Hospital for cuts on his hand.

Norwich police said they responded to a call at 8:41 a.m. saying that shots had been fired at 252 Old Canterbury Tpke., lot 53.

"The shooter fired numerous rounds at a parked vehicle with multiple handguns, then fled the scene," according to a police description of the incident.

Norwich police gave the Willimantic department a description of the incident as well as information about who they believed was responsible. Willimantic officers found Ortiz at 61 Keating St. in their town and he surrendered without incident.

Ortiz was held on a $250,000 band and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Norwich Superior Court.
