UPDATED: Waterford seeking witnesses of Route 32 crash that injured two

Waterford – A single-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Route 32 shut down the roadway for nearly three hours and sent two people to the hospital, including one taken by medical helicopter.

Quaker Hill Fire Department Assistant Chief Vincent Ukleja said two occupants of a Chevrolet C30, box-type van required extrication from the vehicle after the 12:13 p.m. crash between Red Cedar and Donald avenues. One passenger was reported conscious, Ukleja said, while a second was unconscious, prompting the call for a Life Star helicopter.

The helicopter landed in a vacant field next to Union Cemetery, Ukleja said, while the second occupant was taken by ambulance to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. Ukleja did not know to what hospital the victim was flown, and the conditions or genders of the occupants have not been released.

In a press release this evening on Facebook, Waterford police said their initial investigation indicated that a motor vehicle traveling north on Norwich Road traveled off the right shoulder of the road, striking a parked vehicle in a private business lot, before continuing down a slight embankment and coming to rest on its side.

Waterford police, who were monitoring a road construction job in front of McCarthy’s Heating Oil on Route 32, first called in the crash, Ukleja said.

The Oswegatchie, Cohanzie and Montville Fire Departments sent personnel as well, Ukleja said.

The roadway reopened about 3:20 p.m., but the Waterford police accident investigation team remained on scene, he said. The crash remains under investigation by the Waterford Police Department and members of its Accident Investigation Team.
