The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut recently awarded $6,000 grants to New London's Writers Block Ink and Hygienic Art Center's Do the Write Thing.

Writers Block Ink teaches middle school and high school students leadership and teamwork skills, while exploring social and personal issues through the creation of writing, dance, poetry, music and theater.

Do the Write Thing enrolls students from Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School and ISAAC in a creative writing and photography program. Sessions include monthly meetings with parents and feature informal readings, poetry, songs and photography exhibits.

Connecticut College raised the grant funds last fall when it hosted a concert by Irish music ensemble Cherish the Ladies; dubbed "Cherish New London" all ticket proceeds went to arts organizations in New London.
