Approval keeps Lyme plans for town hall, library on track

Lyme - With the announcement of a $500,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant this week, the town is on track to break ground in July on renovations to the town hall and library.

Lyme was one of 10 towns that received the state funds for capital improvement projects, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a news release Monday.

In a referendum in May, town residents approved the $4.7 million project to renovate town hall and rebuild the library. Approval was contingent on the town raising $1 million from grants and donations before construction.

With the new grant and the funds already in hand, the town is close to reaching its $1 million goal, said Janis Witkins, a member of the Town Campus Center Building Committee. The committee hopes to complete the construction project within 18 months.

The renovated buildings would comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and include computer server rooms, a new vault to safeguard town records and library meeting rooms for town programs and clubs, Witkins said.

First Selectman Ralph Eno said the town will save money by providing about 30 to 40 years of "maintenance-free infrastructure."

"It should put the town in good stead for the foreseeable future," he said.

The construction project includes easily accessible archives at the library. "The service potential is going to be much more broadly based," Eno said.

Committee Chairman Dan Hagan said he was very pleased the state found merit in the town's proposal. He said it pays tribute to the first selectman and the Board of Selectman who prepared the proposal.
