Police reportedly chase, shoot armed truck driver

New London Police shoot a man after a truck he was driving rolled over at the intersection of Bank Street and Jefferson Avenue and then refused to put down a gun Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011.

New London – Police shot and wounded a man who was allegedly armed and whose stolen truck rolled over near the intersection of Bank Street and Jefferson Avenue this afternoon, according to several eyewitnesses.

New London police were chasing the driver down Ocean Avenue and Bank Street when the truck tipped over, according to witnesses, though police Deputy Chief Marshall Segar said during a press conference tonight at the scene that there was no police pursuit.

The truck was stolen in New London from Crystal Ice, an ice company based out of Norwalk, police said.

"I heard a crash," said Gary Nelson, who was near the Sam's Food Stores at the intersection of Bank Street and Ocean Avenue at the time of the incident, reported just before 4:40 p.m. "The cops opened fire … and then continued to scream, 'Show me your hands.' And then blew up like three or four more rounds."

One officer climbed onto the cab door of the overturned truck, and a second officer shot at the driver through the windshield. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots fired.

Police are not currently releasing the suspect's name or age, who was taken by Life Star helicopter to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Segar said. Police are still at the scene; the state police Eastern District Major Crime Squad has taken over the investigation.

Bank Street remains closed between Montauk and Ocean avenues.
