The final month of 2012 was rough and when 2013 began, the turbulence persisted. Throughout 2012 the media plagued our understanding with the pseudo-scientific declaration that an ancient Mayan Indian calendar was ceasing on Dec. 21 and signaling the end of the world. Then on Dec. 14, a week prior to the apocalyptic prophecy, a mentally deranged young man kills his mother then killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

As the New Year was upon us a fiscal cliff arose and it seemed that our economy would surely topple over it. However, the world didn't end as the Mayan Indians rejoiced the beginning of a new calendar. The Sandy Hook massacre can never be erased, forgotten or corrected, but it reopened our eyes to the importance of mental health and more stringent gun control, and it brought our country together as we all gave support to the families of the victims.

Then, remarkably, Congress came to an agreement Jan. 1, voting 257-167 in favor of raising taxes on the rich and leaving tax cuts in place for the poor and middle class, thus dodging the fiscal cliff.

I feel that it is safe to say that hope prevailed. Remember Sandy Hook.
