Small amount of marijuana detected during routine drill at Ledyard school

Ledyard — Local police K-9 units conducted a training exercise during a routine lockdown drill at Ledyard High School Tuesday, during which a small amount of marijuana was detected in a student's locker.

The marijuana was not part of the training exercise and belonged to a student.

Superintendent Mike Graner said he had invited the Ledyard police department, which coordinates local K-9 unit training, to do a drug sweep during a planned lockdown drill at the high school. Graner said these sweeps are done a once or twice every school year. Students and teachers were informed during the drill of the K-9 unit exercise.

The student responsible was disciplined in accordance with board policy and the parents were notified, he said. The Ledyard Board of Education policy regarding student possession of controlled substances is 10 days' suspension.
