Waterford - Robert and Teresa Schacht are the only farmers in town who, in 15 days, can apply for a property tax exemption for the buildings they use as part of their farming operation on Hunts Brook Road.
The Schachts can apply for the exemption because on Monday, the Representative Town Meeting unanimously passed an ordinance allowing farmers in town to apply for a property tax exemption for buildings used in farming.
The ordinance allows exemptions for buildings used "actually and exclusively" in farming and buildings that are assessed up to $100,000 that are used to provide housing for seasonal farm employees, but the exemption does not apply to the farmer's home.
As part of the exemption, each year after the assessment date, each individual farmer, group of farmers, partnership or corporation must apply in writing for the tax exemption and include documentation that they, the group, the partnership or corporation derived at least $15,000 in gross sales from the farming operation or incurred at least $15,000 in expenses related to the farming operation.
The exemptions will apply to the Oct. 1, 2013, grand list.
