Jewett City retailers charged in synthetic marijuana case

Two businessmen in Jewett City were arrested Tuesday on warrants that allege they were in possession of K2, a synthetic form of marijuana. The arrests were part of an investigation that the Jewett City resident state trooper’s office along with the Eastern District Statewide Narcotics Task Force launched into the possession and sale of K2.

Sam Rita, 52, and Santosh Mahey, 46, both of Colchester, were each charged with illegal possession of narcotics, tampering with evidence and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Police said Rita and Mahey, owners of the Best Way gas station in Jewett City, were found in possession of large quantities of the synthetic marijuana in their business.

Both men were held in lieu of a $75,000 bond pending their arraignments Wednesday in Norwich Superior Court.
