Rams’ Boys’ Basketball Wins Two

Published February 07. 2013 4:00AM

The Old Saybrook boys' basketball squad won two games last week in its quest to qualify for the state tournament and came two games closer to achieving that.

Versus Morgan on Jan. 29, the Rams defeated the Huskies 51-47 in a close contest. Old Saybrook held a slim 28-24 lead at halftime, but trailed by six in the middle of the third quarter. Junior Nate Corrado provided a spark of energy that saw the Rams outscore Morgan at the end of the third to lead by seven going into the fourth. Morgan tied the score in the fourth, but a key basket by Michael Barrett and great defense in the last few minutes allowed the Rams to win by four. Barrett led Old Saybrook with 18 points, while Sam Henry notched 15. Junior Danny Murphy played well defensively throughout the game.

On Feb. 1, Old Saybrook defeated Haddam-Killingworth 66-42 in what Coach Tim Arsenault called "the Rams' best performance of the season thus far." Henry led all scorers with 17, while senior Nick DuBord added 13-his high for the season-while Barrett added 12 and Murphy scored 11 points. Senior guard Mike Souza led the fast break all night and set up teammates for many easy shots and layups. Senior Suraj Khosla also provided a spark off the bench for the total team effort. With the win, the Rams end the week 6-8 overall and 6-7 in the Shoreline Conference.
