Fitch's Latham, Powers capture state titles
New Haven - Fitch High School's Tyler Latham won the 55-meter hurdles and Eric Powers captured the pole vault during Friday night's CIAC Class L indoor track and field championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Latham, a junior, finished the hurdles final in 7.94 seconds, edging North Haven's John Spencer, who was second in 7.95 seconds. He also placed fifth in the 300 in 37.11.
Powers, a senior, cleared 13 feet to win the pole vault.
Latham and Powers helped the Falcons, fresh off a victory in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division meet, finish third in the team standings with 52 points. Darien won the team title with 100 points followed by Windsor with 74.
Lexus Gordon also placed in two events for Fitch. The senior was third in the long jump (21 feet, 3½ inches) and fifth in the high jump (5-10).
Other place-winners for the Falcons were senior Johnny Diep in the pole vault (12-0), senior Mustapha Noibi in the long jump (fourth, 20-7), senior Devin Lehman in the 600 (sixth, 1:27.50), the 4x400 relay team (third, 3:35.01) and the 4x200 relay team (fourth, 1:36.53).
In the girls' portion of the meet, East Lyme finished seventh third with 23 points and Fitch was 14th with nine points. Darien cruised to the team title with 126 points.
For East Lyme, sophomore Gianna Folz was second in the 55 hurdles (9.07), sophomore Isabelle Kenny was third in the 55 hurdles (9.10), junior Kelsen Shukis was fourth in the shot put (33-10), senior Jaimee Szupiany was sixth in the pole vault (9-0), senior Devin Perez was sixth in the high jump (4-10), the 4x800 relay team was sixth (10:11.57.), the sprint medley relay team was sixth (4:39.05) and the 4x400 relay team was sixth (4:24.62).
For Fitch, junior Hannah Finton was fourth in the long jump (16-¼), senior Ebony Bell was sixth in the long jump (15-8½) and the 4x200 relay team was fourth (1:52.10).
