Stonington — A woman driver who police say forced a car off Route 27 late this afternoon later struck a large maple tree on Pellegrino Road, forcing police to shut down the road because of fears it could collapse.
Police said the woman, who will be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in connection with the 4:55 p.m incident, was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with non life threatening injuries. Her car was destroyed in the head on crash.
Police said the woman, whose name was not immediately available, forced the car off the road on Route 27 near School Street. The crash occurred near 36 Pellegrino Road as she drove towards Flanders Road.
Police said the tree will have to be taken down Monday. The work can not be done tonight because of strong winds.
