Stepping into Mohegan culture

Amanda Russell of the Mohegan Tribe Cultural Department demonstrates a jingle dance Monday during a presentation on Mohegan culture and history to 40 Connecticut history students at Montville High School. The tribe's Outreach and Tradition specialist, Susan Meehan, whose Mohegan name is Golden Wolf, also passed around replicas of Mohegan artifacts while describing her ancestors' customs. The course is one of eight in the state that received a $1,000 grant from the Mohegan tribe for its focus on native history. The class, taught by Derek Wainwright, will have the opportunity to visit historic sites at the Mohegan reservation.
