Local roundup: St. Bernard girls survive, advance in Class S

Montville - St. Bernard High School advanced in the Class S state girls' basketball tournament with a 28-25 win over No. 21 East Hampton in first-round action on Monday.

Junior Casey Sullivan had 10 points while sophomore Kaitlyn Berkel had seven points and four steals and junior Brittney Walenta added seven points for the No. 12 Saints (14-9). St. Bernard led 12-7 at halftime. St. Bernard visits No. 5 Bolton on Thursday in second-round action.

In other games:

• Eighth-seeded Ledyard held No. 25 Masuk to just eight points in the first half and cruised to a 55-38 victory in the Class L first round. The Colonels (19-4) will play host to No. 9 Torrington in Thursday's second round.

Olivia DelGrosso scored 15 points to lead Ledyard while Michelle Klinikowski finished with 14, Kylie Fustini added 12 points and 12 rebounds and Ari Fustini had seven assists.

• No. 11 East Lyme defeated No. 22 Foran 41-31 in a Class L first-round game. The Vikings were led by Jenna Schumacher, who had 11 points. Ali Stoddard had 10 points while Rebecca McGlone added seven points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and two steals and Colleen Durkee added nine points, three blocks and four steals.

East Lyme (17-5) visits No. 6 RHAM-Hebron on Thursday in second-round action.

Sun signs Leedham

• British Olympian Johannah Leedham has signed to play with the WNBA's Connecticut Sun. The 5-foot-10 Leedham, drafted by the Sun almost three years ago, led the British Olympic team, averaging 16.2 points and 5.2 rebounds during the 2012 summer games in London.

Leedham scored 3,050 points during her college career at Franklin Pierce, becoming the all-time leading scorer in Division II women's basketball.

It will be a homecoming of sorts for Leedham, who was the New England Prep School Player of the Year in 2005 at Connecticut's Cheshire Academy.

Women's basketball

• Mitchell College senior guard Kaylee Cerruto and freshman forward Amanda Garcia were honorable mention picks on the 2012-13 All-New England Collegiate Conference team. Cerruto started all 25 games and led the Mariners in scoring (11.0) and assists (3.6). Garcia averaged 10.6 points and a team best 7.6 rebounds.

Women's hockey

• Connecticut College senior forward Sam Schoeneberger was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Schoeneberger scored the game-winning goal with 4:46 remaining in 1-0 victory at Trinity in the first round of the NESCAC tournament on Saturday. It was her seventh goal of the season and 14th of her career.

Boys' basketball

• Second-seeded Old Lyme will play host to No. 3 Cromwell at 7 tonight in the semifinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament. The Wildcats (16-5) beat Cromwell in their only regular-season meeting, 50-47, back on Dec. 15.

• Eastern Connecticut Conference officials announced that the doors at St. Bernard for Wednesday's semifinals will open at 5 p.m. Second-seeded Woodstock Academy faces No. 3 New London at 6 p.m., followed by No. 1 Ledyard against No. 5 Norwich Free Academy at 7:30. New London is the defending champion.

H.S. wrestling

• Ledyard finished third in the final Norwich Bulletin state wrestling poll. The Colonels, who went 20-1 during the regular season and won their second straight Class M championship, finished with 184 points. Class LL and State Open champion Danbury was the unanimous No. 1 choice with 13 first-place votes and 260 points while Class S champion Windham was second with 216 points.

H.S. hockey

• Zach Jones and Topher Freeman scored goals for Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard during its 8-2 loss to New Fairfield-Immaculate on Sunday night.
