18 cats reported dead in Connecticut fire

BERLIN, Conn. (AP) — Berlin officials say 18 cats died in an early morning house fire and several other pets were rescued.

Firefighters were called to Smokey Hill Road at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. The garage and part of the home were on fire.

Residents of the house got out safely.

Fire officials say 18 cats died. A dog and several other cats were rescued and brought to the Berlin animal control facility.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in the mudroom area between the garage and the house. The cause remains under investigation.
