Local roundup: Avery Point adding three to Hall of Fame
Groton - Mike Blais, Jeff Clark and Jayson Drobiak will be inducted into the UConn-Avery Point Athletic Hall of Fame on Wednesday, March 6.
The induction ceremony begins at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Branford House on the Avery Point campus.
Blais, an East Lyme High School graduate, was an All-New England selection as a pitcher for the Pointers in 1990 and 1991. He led Avery Point to its first New England title in 1990 and later played two seasons playing at UConn, where he helped the Huskies reach the NCAA regionals.
Blais signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1993, finished his minor league career with the Houston Astros in 1998 and now lives in Glenview, Ill.
Clark, a Ledyard graduate, played for the Pointers in 1999 and 2000, where he was an All-American pitcher in 2000 and an All-New England first baseman in 1999. he had a 15-5 record in two seasons with a 2.57 ERA and batted .371 with nine home runs and 68 RBI.
He spent six seasons in the San Francisco Giants minor leagues and has been the pitching coach at Avery Point since 2007.
Drobiak, a Griswold grad, was a two-time All-American shortstop for the Pointers in 1998 and 1999 and was a member of Avery Point's first World Series team in 1999, where he was selected to the all-tournament team. He remains among the program career leaders in total bases (219, 1st), hits (118, 2nd), doubles (34, 2nd), hits (118, 2nd) and home runs (19, 3rd).
He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1999, also spent time with the Yankees and Phillies before retiring after 2007.
Sales joins Sun staff
• Nykesha Sales will be joining the Connecticut Sun this season as an assistant to the coaching staff and a community liaison, the team announced.
Sales is the all-time leading scorer in Sun franchise history. She will help new head coach Anne Donovan and her staff at practice and be an active team ambassador throughout the season.
• Malcolm Simmons had 18 points and 16 rebounds to pace Avery Point to a 66-52 over Lincoln College in a NJCAA Region 21 first round game. Philkwan Tate had 18 points and 14 rebounds for Avery and Tyler Barnes scored 11. The Pointers will play Roxbury CC in Saturday's semifinals at Holyoke Community College (4 p.m.)
