Pfizer Inc. is part of a joint venture whose goal is to advance treatments for HIV-positive patients said this week that it was taking steps to improve children's access to life-saving drugs.

ViiV Healthcare Ltd. said it plans to license pediatric-strength doses of HIV drug abacavir to a United Nations-backed organization trying to boost children's access to treatment.

The Medicines Patent Pool will have the right to access the drug in 118 countries where nearly all children with HIV reside.

"The overarching goal of our efforts is to improve the lives of children living with HIV," ViiV' CEO Dominique Limet said in a statement.
