    Police say marijuana cultivation operation discovered in Jewett City; four charged

    Jewett City - State police arrested four people Friday in connection with the alleged discovery of a marijuana cultivation operation at an apartment in Jewett City.

    As part of an ongoing investigation, police said they served a warrant at 36 Soule St., Apt. B, where they discovered several marijuana plants, packaged marijuana and drug paraphernalia, along with cultivation and packaging materials.

    An eight-month-old child was found sleeping in close proximity to the grow operation, police said. The child was taken into the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

    The two residents, Gregory Vowels, 59, and Julie Vowels, 60, were each charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, cultivation of marijuana, operating a drug factory and risk of injury to a minor.

    A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Jeffrey Vowels, 32, and Jillian Nazarian, 32, both of Mathewson Street in Jewett City. They were each charged with risk of injury to a minor.

    The arrest was a result of work by state police from Troop E in Montville, the Jewett City Resident Troopers Office and the Statewide Narcotics Task Force – East Field Office.

    Gregory and Julie Vowels were each held in lieu of a $75,000 bond and scheduled to appear Monday in Norwich Superior Court. Jeffrey Vowels and Nazarian were released on $1,000 bond and also due to appear in court on Monday.
