UConn passed along some injury updates today.
X-rays Sunday confirmed that junior Niels Giffey fractured his right index finger in Saturday’s 61-56 loss at Cincinnati. He will see an orthopedic specialist to determine a treatment plan.
It appears doubtful that Giffey, a key reserve, will play again this season. UConn has only two games remaining, visiting South Florida Wednesday and hosting Providence Saturday in Storrs.
Junior Shabazz Napier, the team’s leading scorer, received treatment Sunday on his injured right foot. He’s still experiencing discomfort despite sitting out Saturday’s game. He’ll continue to wear a walking boat and be evaluated on a day to day basis.
R.J. Evans of Salem replaced Napier in the starting lineup against Cincinnati, finishing with two points, six rebounds, two assists and three turnovers.
The Huskies (19-9, 9-7) are looking to avoid a season-high three game losing streak on Wednesday. Even if Napier returns for the game, he won’t be 100 percent.
South Florida earned its second Big East win on Sunday, beating DePaul, 83-73.
In the first meeting this season, UConn won 69-64 in overtime on Feb. 3 in Storrs.
