Short-handed Huskies suffer worst loss this season

UConn extended its losing streak to a season-high three straight on Wednesday night.

It was an ugly loss to perhaps the worst team in the Big East Conference.

South Florida 65, UConn 51.

The Huskies dropped to 19-10 overall, 9-8 in the Big East. It was their lowest point total this season.

Sophomore DeAndre Daniels carried the Huskies, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double.

The Huskies played shorthanded in the Big East game held at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla.

They were without leading scorer and team leader Shabazz Napier for the second game. His sore right foot has yet to heal.

They were without key reserve Niels Giffey whose fractured right finger has ended his season.

And frontcourt starter Tyler Olander left the game in the second half after injurying his left foot. No word on the extent of his injury.

Freshman Omar Calhoun is clearly bothered by his sore right wrist. He went a dismal 1-for-14 from the field, including 1-for-9 from 3-point land.

A healthy Ryan Boatright wasn't much better. He had 11 points on 3-for-13 shooting.

UConn converted 35 percent overall and played porous defense.

Salem's R.J. Evans made his second career start, chipping in 10 points and five rebounds.

Now UConn returns home to face a red-hot Providence in its season finale. Game time is noon at Gampel Pavilion.
