BSA Troop 490 Attends West Point Camporee

Twenty-nine boys from Madison Boy Scout Troop 490 recently attended the 51st annual West Point Scoutmaster's Council Camporee. Graduating West Point Senior Cadet Colleen Harrison of Northford (wearing red shirt), sponsored the Troop for the camporee.

The weekend began with a hike over Bull Hill and completed with the pass and review parade evaluation by the West Point Commandant of Cadets, Brigadier General Richard D. Clarke.

Fifteen leadership and challenge stations were led by West Point Cadets who volunteered their weekend, hosting over 5,000 Boy, Girl, and Venture Scouts. Troop 490 Scouts earned high marks in camouflage application, fire building race, leadership challenge/team work, drill team (marching), and building a hidden shelter out of natural surroundings.

This year's camporee honored Second Lt. David E. Rylander, graduate of West Point Class 2011 and prominent member of the Scoutmaster's Council, killed in action in May 2012 in Logar Province, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained from an IED.
