Stonington — A Westerly man who cut his arms on glass after breaking in and out of the McGill Chevrolet dealership early Saturday morning, then left a trail of blood in eight cars he subsequently entered in downtown Pawcatuck, police said.

Dwayne E. Hazard, 26, of 52 Franklin St., was charged with third-degree burglary, eight counts of third-degree criminal mischief, seven counts of simple trespass, four counts of sixth-degree larceny and one count of second-degree failure to appear in court.

He is being held on $52,500 in bonds and is slated to appear in New London Superior Court Monday.

Police said that shortly after midnight, Hazard entered three cars in the dealership lot and then smashed a window to get inside the showroom. When the alarm sounded, he smashed another window to get it. In doing so he suffered cuts to his arms. He later refused medical treatment.

Police said that as Hazard made his way to his girlfriend’s apartment on Liberty Street, he entered eight unlocked cars on Chase, Moss, Stanton and Morgan streets and Lester Avenue.

They said he stole items such as a purse, cigarettes, a container of .177-caliber pellets and a car stereo. The criminal mischief charges were lodged because the car owners will now have to pay to have blood stains removed from their cars.

Police responded to the McGill alarm and were able to quickly identify Hazard as the person who they suspected of breaking into the dealership. They then found him at his girlfriend’s apartment.

Later Saturday, police began to get calls from residents about blood inside their cars and items being taken. Police then linked Hazard to those crimes. Police have recovered some of the items, which have blood on them.
