Kentucky's Kastine Evans, a junior from Salem, has been named a finalist for the 2013 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.
Evans was selected a candidate from 500 minority student-athletes nominated by their respective institutions.
A Norwich Free Academy graduate, Evans has a 3.735 grade point average as a business management major. She created her own non-profit organization called "Shooting for Success," which is an after-school program for disadvantaged youth.
Evans also serves as the women's basketball student-athlete advisory committee representative and is a two-time All-Southeastern Conference Academic selection.
Kentucky, which is the No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament's Bridgeport region, plays Navy on Sunday in Queens, N.Y.
• Coast Guard Academy sophomore diver Sara Cantrell placed 22nd on the 3-meter board at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.
Cantrell, the first Coast Guard female diver to qualify for the NCAA championships, posted a score of 378.30. She will compete on the 1-meter board on Friday.
Connecticut College junior Julia Pielock placed 10th in the 50-yard freestyle to earn honorable mention All-America honors. Her time was 23.41.
In the men's competition, Coast Guard sophomore Christian Brindamour placed 13th out of 50 swimmers in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 20.46 seconds. He will compete in the 100 freestyle event on Saturday.
• Conn College scored the game's first 10 goals in its 15-3 rout of Wellesley at Clermont, Fla. Libby Nichols and Taylor Thomas both had three goals and an assist for Conn (2-3) and Izzy Mark scored three times.
• Tim Lawrence had three goals and Joey Kramer added a goal and two assists as unbeaten Plattsburgh State downed Conn College 7-5 at Baltimore. Brett McClelland had a goal and an assist for Plattsburgh (7-0). Andrew Freedman had three goals for the Camels (2-2) and Chad Sawyer added two goals and an assist.
• Pat Rogers of Waterford had two hits and an RBI to lead UConn-Avery Point past Dakota County Community College of Minnesota 5-4 in Vero Beach, Fla. Christian Dzienkiewicz earned the win and Tyler Mikula pitched the seventh to get the save while Bryan Rivera had two hits.
Avery Point also played Iowa Lakes CC, losing 8-4. Rivera had two hits for the Pointers (8-3).
