UConn incoming recruit Kentan Facey, a 6-foot-9 forward from Glen Head, N.Y., has been named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in New York.
Facey has led Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville to a 24-2 record, averaging 14.5 points, 12.2 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots per game.
Long Island Lutheran, which is No. 1 in the New York State Sportswriters Association Class AA rankings, will compete today in the semifinals of the Class AA New York Federation Tournament of Champions against Abraham Lincoln High of Brooklyn.
A native of Trelawny, Jamaica, Facey also distinguished himself off the court, volunteering with youth basketball programs and a Hope for Haiti benefit at his school.
"Kentan has a relentless motor on the court," UConn coach Kevin Ollie said in a released statement. "He is someone who can come in here and be a solid rebounder, who will pursue the basketball every time, up and down the court.
"Plus, he's a fabulous young man. I can't wait to coach him."
Facey is the second consecutive UConn recruit to win the Gatorade State Player of the Year in New York, following current UConn freshman guard Omar Calhoun of Brooklyn.
