I would urge The Day editors and the General Assembly to think twice about going forward with plans for Route 11 at this time.
The Highway Trust Fund has been running deficits exceeding $10 billion for each of the past few years with promises of at least that much in the future.
The trust fund obtains its money from taxes on gasoline, diesel fuel, liquid petroleum gas, liquid natural gas, sale of trucks and trailers, heavy vehicles, etc. With more fuel efficient vehicles the amount going to the trust fund has dropped. To bring the fund to a positive number will require an increase in taxes. Good luck with that in Washington.
