    Sport putts: Local golf notes

    • Adam Rainaud of the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme weathered rain and stiff competition to win his second straight Connecticut PGA Assistant Championship. He finished with a 1-under par 143 in the two day event that ended Wednesday at Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent.

Rainaud fired a 70 Wednesday to hold off New Haven Country Club's Brent Paladino who placed three strokes back with a 2-over, 146 (73-73).

"I was excited the course was still in great shape and I can't believe how good it was with that much rain," Rainaud said in a Connecticut Section PGA release. "I had a great pairing with Brent Paladino and Jim Hathaway and I just tried to get off to a good start similar to (Tuesday). The front nine is definitely much easier than the back."

Rainaud advances to play in the National Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship on Nov. 3-6 at Wanamaker Course at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. He placed third nationally last year.

"The Wanamaker course fits well for me," Rainaud said. "I'm looking forward to going down to Florida and playing again. I always try to win, but I never go into an even expecting anything because it's fun just to be able to get away and go play in a tournament in the national level."

Other local golfers in the Connecticut PGA Assistant Championship field include Chad Schofield of Lake of Isles (81-78-159) and Darren Falk of Black Hall (83-81-164).

    • Black Hall is hosting the 80th Connecticut Section PGA Championship next week. Competition in the 54-hole stroke play event begins Monday and runs through Wednesday. Following 36 holes, the field will be cut to 36, including ties and golfers within seven shots of the leader.

John Paesani of Norwich Golf Course headlines a field of local golfers. Black Hall's Andrew Campbell and Falk will try to take advantage of their home course knowledge. Kevin Shea of New London Country Club, Patrick Boucher and Archie Cart of Lake of Isles, and Casey Roan of Shennecossett Golf Course also are signed up to compete.

Good luck to Paesani who's leaving his job as head pro at Norwich at the end of the year after 22 years at the club.

    • Rain postponed the second and third rounds of the 24th Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship Wednesday at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford. Play is rescheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13.

Scott Farrell of Black Hall holds a two-stroke lead after shooting 2-under 69 in the first round. Steven Bugg of Clinton and Raymond Floyd Jr. of Innis Arden Golf Club in Greenwich are tied for second at 71. Phil Perry of Black Hall is tied for fourth with a 72.

Alex Romeo is tied for 14th at 75 and fellow Black Hall member Bill Hermanson is tied for 26th with a 77. Jim Lathrop of Pequot Golf Club shot a 78.

    • Three local golfers fell just short of qualifying for the 31st U.S. Mid Amateur. Playing in a qualifier Aug. 29 at Tallwood Country Club, Steve Chevalier of Groton placed eighth with a 75. Tony Susi of Gales Ferry and Bill Hermanson of East Lyme tied for ninth with a 76.

    • Lake of Isles in North Stonington recently held its junior club championship. Joseph Cooney of Middletown shot a 74 to win the boys' ages 15-17 division and Spencer Salvas had a 75 to take second. Thomas Labbe of Watertown fired a 72 to win the boys' 13-14 division and Nicklaus Harrington of Chaplin took second with a 73.

In the boys' 10-12, nine hole event, Jason Liu captured first with a 38 and Tyler Goulet of Harwinton was second with a 42.

Marlene Tartaro of Glastonbury shot a 70 to win the girls' 10-13, nine hole event.
