Some UConn men’s basketball news to pass along:

 -- Judging from the buzz on Twitter, UConn is the running for now former North Carolina State guard Rodney Purvis, who announced Monday that he is transferring after just one season with the Wolfpack.

Here’s what former N.C.State standout Julius Hodge tweeted on Monday:

“I'm salty that we didn't do everything to keep RP! But if he's going to #UConn that's a good choice. Kevin Ollie's a star on the rise.”

Purvis averaged 8.3 points and 2.4 rebounds while starting 23 of 35 games, averaging 25.5 minutes per game, but his playing time tailed off toward the end of the season. He shot 44.2 percent from the field and ranked second on the team in made 3-pointers with 30. He had 45 assists and 51 turnovers.

He came off the bench to score seven points in his team’s 69-65 win over UConn on Dec. 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

“I have enjoyed every moment of my time here at N.C.State,” Purvis said in a released statement. “All of the people involved with the program have been great. However, I feel like it’s time for me to make a fresh start, step outside of my comfort zone and continue my career in a new environment.”

Here’s what coach Mark Gottfried said in a release: “Rodney was instrumental in our run to the NCAA tournament this season. We appreciate his contributions and wish him the very best in his future.”

Purvis will have to transfer to a program outside of the Atlantic Coast Conference, as the school will not allow Purvis to remain in conference. The ban extends to Syracuse,Pittsburgh, Notre Dame andLouisville– four future ACC teams – as well as Missouri and Cincinnati, two future non-conference foes.

Purvis attended Upper Room Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., earning McDonald’s All-American and 2012 Associated Press North Carolina Men’s Prep Basketball Player of the Year honors. He averaged 26.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

He originally committed to Louisville before going to N.C. State.

 -- UConn guard Omar Calhoun was one of 21 Division I freshmen selected to the Collegeinsider.com’s 2013 Kyle Macy Freshmen All-America Team.

Calhoun averaged 11.1 points and 3.9 rebounds while starting every game but the regular season finale due to a sprained right wrist. He was second on the team in converted three-pointers with 43.

The winner of the Macy Award will be announced on April 5 at the Final Four inAtlanta.

 -- According to the Washington Post, Maryland and UConn will  play a season-opening game on Nov. 8 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

It will be the sixth meeting between the two programs. The Huskies lead the series, 3-2, but lost the last two meetings.

They last met in 2002, with Maryland posting a 90-82 win in an NCAA tournament Elite Eight game in Syracuse.
