Stonington selectmen deny $2,600 waiver request

Stonington - The Board of Selectmen has denied a request to waive $2,600 in interest assessed against the previous owner of three-family home on Mechanic Street, where sewage and other problems forced the town to relocate tenants to a hotel about 18 months ago.

The town paid $7,200 for hotel rooms for the tenants after the incident at 71-73 Mechanic St. The bill had gone unpaid by Shannon LLC of Westerly and accumulated $2,600 in interest.

First Selectman Ed Haberek said a new owner purchased the property and asked for waiver of the interest.

But at a selectmen's meeting last week, Haberek said that while he appreciated a new owner taking over the house and making repairs, the town has never waived interest on liens before. Selectwoman Glee McAnanly said if the board waived the interest it would be setting a precedent.
