Purvis picks UConn

The Huskies scored a major recruiting victory with the news that Rodney Purvis is transferring to UConn.

Newsobserver.com broke the story today.

Purvis, a 6-foot-3 guard from Raleigh, N.C., averaged 8.3 points and 2.4 rebounds during his freshman season at North Carolina State. He appeared in 35 games, starting 23 while averaging 25.5 minutes.

“I really trust coach (Kevin) Ollie,” Purvis told newsobserver.com. “They have a great tradition of producing NBA guards and that’s where I want to be someday.”

Purvis will be eligible to play in 2014 after sitting out a season.

The news comes as no surprise.

UConn was considered the likely destination when Purvis announced Monday that he was leaving N.C.State.

Purvis had UConn in his final two during the recruiting process before picking N.C.State. Ollie and associate head coach Glen Miller saw Purvis play in high school and on the AAU circuit.

A McDonald’s All-American, Purvis attended Upper Room Christian Academy in Raleigh, earning 2012 Associated Press North Carolina Men’s Prep Basketball Player of the Year honors. He averaged 26.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

He helped the Wolfpack (24-11) reach the NCAA tournament. He came off the bench to score seven points in his team’s 69-65 win over UConn on Dec. 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
