H.S. roundup: Fitch softball team beats Westerly 5-2

Groton - Haley Flax pitched a complete-game, five-hitter to earn her first varsity win as the Fitch High School softball team beat Westerly 5-2 Thursday.

The Falcons (1-1) bounced back from an 11-6 loss at Stamford in their season opener on Wednesday by scoring the game's first five runs against Westerly.

In other games:

• Andrea Chiaradio had two hits and three runs scored as Stonington defeated Bacon 10-4. Mackensie Crowley had two hits and two RBI and Jen Paride had two hits and an RBI for the Bears (2-0).

Girls' tennis

• Lindsey Knepshield, Meredith Aird, Kaylyn Wiese and Meghan Traucsh won their singles matches in Old Lyme's 6-1 win over Valley Regional in the Shoreline Conference. The doubles duos of Hannah O'Brien-Michelle Gao and Emily Brault-Lexi Sibley also won.

• Morgan Deschamps, Lauren Gagnon, Gabby Tudisca, Olivia Kenyon and Emily Kivela posted singles wins in Norwich Tech's 5-2 win over Grasso Tech. In doubles, Aryelle Newella and Alicia Martin and Amber Dickinson and Casey Mercad won for Grasso.

• Jillian Stevenson and Emily Coon won singles matches in Norwich Free Academy's 4-3 win over New London. Lilliah James and Soraya Colon-Milan posted singles wins for the Whalers.

Boys' tennis

• NFA beat New London 4-3 behind singles wins from Jacob Henschm, Aaron Lord, Zachery Peter and Bryon Harris in a season opener. The No. 1 duo of Seth Lake and Collin Sawyer helped lead New London to a doubles sweep. Bahaa Hoda and Wassam Hoda and C.J. Parker and Zavier Veliz also won.

Girls' track

• Dyshelle Pemberton won the 100 (13.3), 200 (27.6) and the 400 (1:00.7), as NFA swept a season-opening dual meet Wednesday, beating Ledyard 113-37 and St. Bernard 113-11. Ledyard topped St. Bernard 110-21. Lauren Scahill won the 800 and 1,600 for Ledyard and Kylie Fustini took the shot put and the discus.

• Hannah Finton won four events (100, 200, 400, long jump) as Fitch beat Windham 102-46 and Tourtellotte 114-32 Wednesday. Christina Szczesny added wins in the 800 and 1,600.
