New London - Cars are boarding normally for the next Cross Sound Ferry boat to Long Island and state police have left the scene.
A New London police officer said no one was ever in any danger.
Shortly before noon a state police tactical unit and other officers had assembled at the ferry lot on the Thames River.
Ferries depart periodically all day from the New London terminal for Orient Point, Long Island, New York.
Melissa O’Hare, of Long Island, N.Y., said she got out of her car just in case she needed to run for cover.
“When I purchased my ticket, I asked the guy if everything was OK and he said police were here as a precaution,” said O’Hare.
O’Hare said the uncertainty of not knowing what was going on was daunting but at the same time, she felt safe because of the police presence.
