Mohegan Sun sets its sights on world record slot tournament

Mohegan - It's been nine years since they set a world record at Mohegan Sun. High time they went for two in one day.

The Uncasville casino intends to do exactly that Saturday when it hosts an attempt to set world records for the Largest Slot Machine Tournament and Most Slot Machines Running The Same Game Simultaneously.

The casino's bid depends on having a record-setting number of players press the machines' buttons as fast as they can at the same time. Participants, who must be Player's Club members, will compete for free, racking up as many points as possible on the machines.

The top scorer will claim a $50,000 cash prize.

"We've had a number of tests over the last couple of months, so customers have had some practice," Bethany Seidel, Mohegan Sun's vice president of marketing and promotions, said. "An adjudicator from Guinness World Records will be there to let us know if we've got the record."

The casino has teamed with Las Vegas-based Bally Technologies, which has retooled 2,500 machines to play the same game during the tournament and then return to normal playing mode. Mohegan Sun operates more than 5,500 slots.

Registration for players will start at 7 a.m. in the casino's Wolf Den, with two sessions of the tournament scheduled to start at 9 and 10.

The record for largest tournament is for the most unique players in one venue in a 24-hour period. The Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, Calif., set the existing mark on Feb. 11, 2012 when 2,885 players participated in three rounds of a tournament played on 1,100 Bally-equipped machines.

Breaking the record ought to be a piece of cake for Mohegan Sun, whose earlier world standard involved an entire cake.

Guinness World Records certified as the world's Largest Wedding Cake a 15,000-pound confection prepared and displayed by Mohegan Sun chefs on Feb. 8, 2004.

In May, the casino will take aim at another record, The Most People Playing A Casino Virtual Racing Game.
