Groton — The public safety and security teams at the Naval Submarine Base have determined that a suspicious package found earlier this afternoon at the main gate poses no threat.

The main gate has been reopened and base access is no longer limited to essential personnel.

At 2:30 p.m. today, the package was found during a random vehicle inspection at the gate, according to the base.

The base increased its security measures and the teams were called to the scene to investigate. Local authorities were also notified. The main gate was closed and base access was restricted.
