Think you have what it takes to perform in front of thousands of people at this year's fireworks display on July 13? Guilford town leaders are now in search of bands to sign up for the annual Battle of the Bands event, taking place on Wednesday, May 22.

This year's concert is being organized by the Guilford Parks & Recreation Department, Guilford Youth & Family Services, the Guilford Free Library, and Developmental Assets for Youth (DAY), as part of DAY's It's Worth It campaign.

"When you have more departments involved in getting the event going, it certainly helps," said Parks & Recreation Supervisor Ellen Clow.

The typically well-attended competition will begin at 1:30 p.m. on an early dismissal day and the organizers are encouraging all and any talented Guilford-based youth bands (grades 7 through 12) to sign up prior to Monday, May 20 to participate.

What's particularly amazing about this event, according to Parks & Recreation Director Rick Maynard, is that the three top bands chosen, in no particular order, will have the opportunity to play at one of the town's most populated summer events: the annual fireworks display.

"These kids work hard and a lot of them get to play in their basements or garages and that's about it-this gives them an opportunity to play for a huge crowd," Maynard said. "There are not a lot of professional bands that can say, 'Hey, we played for 5,000 people.' It's great experience for the kids and for these guys it's a pretty big deal and a big honor for them."

Past years have drawn close to 10 bands competing for their shot to play at the fireworks, though there was plenty of room for more bands this year at press time. Sign up is free.

Last year's Battle of the Bands winners were The Raw Revival, Moose and the Stoops, and Flat Jones and the Broken Machine, who is returning to the stage to compete.

All participants in this year's event will also be considered for the August concert Guilford's Got Talent.

In case of rain, Battle of the Bands will be held at the Guilford Community Center. To sign up, call the Guilford Parks & Recreation Office at 203-453-8068 or email clowe@ci.guilford.ct.us or regank@ci.guilford.ct.us.
