    New London council approves budget

New London — The City Council, for the third and final time Tuesday, approved the 2013-14 budget of $82 million.

The budget represents a 3.38 percent increase in taxes. The tax rate will go from 26.60 mills to 27.5 mills.

The vote was split 4-3, with Council President Michael Passero and councilors Wade Hyslop, Donald Macrino and Anthony Nolan voting in favor. Councilors Adam Sprecace, Marie Friess-McSparran and John Maynard voted against it.

The budget represents $41.6 million for general government spending and $40.4 million for education. It is nearly $900,000 more than the spending plan proposed by Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio earlier this year and restores nearly all of the cuts the mayor had proposed.

The mayor has said he supports the City Council’s proposal and does not plan to veto it.
