Ledyard — One member of the Harvard University crew team was charged early Monday morning with stealing several street signs, including a stop sign, state police said.

Ledyard police were called to the area of 94 Military Highway at 1:53 a.m. for a report of stolen signs and encountered what police said were several intoxicated youths who fled when police arrived.

Police charged William H. Hakim, 21, of Belmont. Mass. with third-degree criminal mischief and sixth-degree larceny.

Hakim is a junior coxswain who majors in East Asian studies.

Lachlan D. Macintosh, 21, of British Columbia, Canada was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, sixth-degree larceny and breach of peace.

He is the brother of fellow crew member, Alex Macintosh.

Both were released on non-surety bonds and expected to appear at a later date in New London Superior Court.

Harvard defeated Yale Sunday in the 148th edition of Harvard-Yale Regatta on the Thames River. The Harvard team's clubhouse, called Red Top, is in Gales Ferry.
