Mayor Angel Taveras visits his city's namesake submarine, USS Providence

Groton — Providence Mayor Angel Taveras visited his city’s namesake submarine, the USS Providence, on Friday, May 31.

“We have a solemn obligation to support our active-duty service members and veterans, as a community and as a nation,” Taveras said. “It is a pleasure to visit the USS Providence and see firsthand how its officers and crew fulfill the mission of the United States Navy.”

Cmdr. Michael Quan, commander of the Providence (SSN 719), said he and the crew appreciated the visit.

“We are very proud of our Providence and the city for which she was named. We look forward to reconnecting with the people of Providence,” Quan said.

Taveras also met with Rear Adm. Kenneth Perry, commander of Submarine Group Two.
