    Sweet surprises at local restaurants

On the dessert menu at the Andrea in Misquamicut: make-your-own smores.

I love being surprised -- in a good way -- when dining out. Lately, the surprises have been sweet -- as in desserts.

Who would think you'd find some of the most awesome cakes and pies at a smalltown pub that sells a lot of pizzas, calzones and pints of beer? But that's what happened when we visited Two Brothers Pub in Salem. You can read my review here or check out the pictures on their Facebook page.

Who would think that, in addition to great food, a golf course in Rhode Island would have goodies like orange flan and mixed berry cobbler made by one of the owners? But that's what we found at Wood River Golf Course. You can read my review here.

And, finally, this week we went to check out Sandy-damaged Misquamicut and had dinner at the Andrea and enjoyed one of the coolest ideas for a dessert: make-your-own smores. You'll get the idea from the photo above. My full review is here.

What restaurant has the best desserts in your opinion?
