Independence Day celebrations

There are four traditional Fourth of July parades in local towns today and this weekend, including the annual Groton parade, shown here.

Fourth of July festivities usually mean one of two things: parades and pyrotechnics. And, lo, we have plenty of both today and tomorrow, with patriotic processions in Groton, Stonington and Old Lyme and fireworks in Norwich. Naturally, too, historical celebrations are part of the mix.

Thursday

Groton 4th of July Parade - 10 a.m., travels down Route 1, Groton; grand marshal is Mick O'Beirne, retired Navy and former mayor.

Stonington Borough Fourth of July Parade & Reading of the Declaration of Independence - 9:45 a.m., Wadawanuck Square, Stonington Borough; parade grand marshal is Bella Miceli of Pawcatuck; at 11:30 a.m., free concert by organist Joseph Ripka, entitled "Stars, Stripes, and Pipes: American Music for the Glorious Fourth," at Calvary Church.

4th of July at Leffingwell House Museum - 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Leffingwell House Museum, 348 Washington St., Norwich; tour of the Revolutionary Era Tavern Room with 1776 artifacts; also, regular exhibits; $5, free for members; (860) 889-9440.

Fireworks at Dodd Stadium - following 7 p.m. Connecticut Tigers baseball game, Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium, 14 Stott Ave., Norwich.

New London Declarations - 10:30 a.m.-noon, Hygienic Art Park, 80 Bank St., New London; appearances from performers playing the Founding Fathers and King George III and a community reading of the Declaration of Independence; free, collection to support New London Breakfasts; (860) 444-2210.

Fireworks at Misquamicut - 9 p.m., Wuskenau Town Beach, Misquamicut, sponsored by Misquamicut Business Association.

Fourth of July Celebration - 1-4 p.m., Nathan Lester House Museum, 153 Vinegar Hill Road, Ledyard; old-fashioned celebration with magician, music, hearth cooking demos, more; free; (860) 464-2040.

Friday

Fireworks in Norwich - 9 p.m., Howard T. Brown Memorial Park, downtown Norwich; also, festival activities throughout the evening leading up to the fireworks.

Fireworks at Dodd Stadium - following 7 p.m. Connecticut Tigers baseball game, Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium, 14 Stott Ave., Norwich.
