Norwich Post 9/11 Memorial to be dedicated in September

Norwich - The Norwich Post 9/11 Memorial Committee will dedicate a memorial on Sept. 28 to the two Norwich men killed in action in Iraq.

Post 9/11 Memorial Committee, at the request of the City of Norwich, worked to design a memorial to Army Specialist Jacob Martir and Army 1st Lieutenant Keith Heidtman. Both were Norwich residents killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Martir, 21, was killed by small arms fire on Aug. 18, 2004, while on patrol in the Sadr City neighborhood of Baghdad. Heidtman, 24, died May 28, 2007, when the OH-58 Kiowa helicopter he was piloting was brought down by enemy fire in Diyala Province northeast of Baghdad. Both men were former students at Norwich Free Academy.

The committee has been fundraising since March 2011 and is near the goal necessary to complete the memorial. The ceremony is planned for 6 p.m. on Sept. 28 and will be open to the public.
