The Old Saybrook Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint Matthew Walton as the associate principal of Old Saybrook Middle School at a special Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, July 23. Walton, who is currently serving as the associate principal in an interim capacity, will begin work immediately.
Prior to serving as the interim associate principal at Old Saybrook Middle School, Walton was a grade 6 and grade 8 English teacher for 10 years. He also served as the language arts coordinator for the past three years.
Walton earned his B.S. from Assumption College, his M.S. from Southern Connecticut State University, and his sixth year degree in educational leadership from the University of Massachusetts.
More than 100 candidates applied for the position. The hiring process extended over three weeks, during which time semi-finalists were interviewed by three different committees comprised of all stakeholders and were the subject of thorough reference checks.
Superintendent of Schools Jan Perruccio commented, "We are very excited to be able to offer Matt Walton this position. He has worked hard to develop relationships with staff, students, and families over the course of this past year. He will join our newly appointed principal, Mandy Ryan, as they lead the middle school through the challenges ahead."
