Ledyard - Representatives from 16 different architectural and engineering firms attended a "pre-proposal" meeting Thursday morning to familiarize themselves with the site of the future police station next to Town Hall.

Residents approved a proposal for the $6.75 million police station along with the budget in May, based on a 12,130-square-foot plan completed by Jacunski Humes Architects. Now the firm will be in competition with others in the area to come up with a finalized design.

Mayor John Rodolico said the site and size of the building are set in stone, but the layout remains a straw-man proposal subject to new ideas.

In the time since the referendum was held, Town Planner Charlie Karno said the town has contracted with a surveyor to do a boundary survey of the property, which he called a "tight site" at Thursday's meeting. It is possible that some adjacent property could be used in the final blueprints.

Karno said the primary goal remains the completion of a new police station to replace the aging one on Lorenz Industrial Parkway, but the town will also look at redoing the parking lot, which serves the Town Hall and its annex, as well as the site's sanitary system.

Designs are due Aug. 30. Karno said he expects the Municipal Building Committee to make a shortlist of builders to interview, and to sign a contract sometime in September or October.

"There is some urgency," Karno told them. "When the public approves money, they like to see action."

Were you surprised to learn about New London's sharp police decline?
Yes. I had no idea the New London police force has shrunk by nearly 30 percent since 2011.
No. I was aware of the sharp decline.
I knew some New London police officers had left the force for other police departments but the number surprised me.
I'm not concerned. I thought the number of police officers for the town the size of New London was too high anyway.
