Montville - A fire that started around 12:30 p.m. in an Oakdale home left the garage damaged but the home intact.

The fire was contained in the back of the garage, which is attached to the house, said Montville fire inspector Roy Shafer. It had been put out by 1:30 p.m. Fire marshal Ray Occhialini remained on the scene trying to determine the cause, said Shafer.

The Montville, Mohegan, Oakdale, Chesterfield, East Great Plains, Preston City and Salem fire departments responded.

Occhialini said the fire likely was caused by a power surge during a thunderstorm that was accompanied by lightning. The fire was reported shortly after power flickered in parts of town.

Occhialini said more than 230 Connecticut Light & Power customers were without power due to a tree that fell onto some power lines in the area of Pires Drive.
