Stonington - Police arrested a Stonington man Friday on charges linked to Tuesday's robbery at the Washington Trust Co. bank branch at McQuade's Market in Westerly.

Norman C. Renaldi, 40, of 73 Pawcatuck Ave. was charged by Stonington police as a fugitive from justice and will face bank robbery charges in Rhode Island, according to a statement from Westerly Police Chief Edward W. St. Clair. Stonington police additionally charged him with a failure to appear in court charge related to a pending motor vehicle case.

The Westerly robbery was reported at 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 27, and Westerly police were looking for a white man, 30 to 40 years old with dark hair, a dark beard or goatee, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and carrying a backpack. The man did not display a weapon during the robbery.

Westerly Police detectives, with the assistance of Hopkinton police, identified Renaldi as a possible suspect hours after the robbery, St. Clair said in his statement. Detectives were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Renaldi based on the investigation. Police believe Renaldi fled the state after the robbery and returned to his home in Pawcatuck.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and more details will be released as the investigation continues.
