Branford Police Dept. Press Release:
Sergeant Philip Ramey was injured Monday evening, Sept. 2, after a vehicle he had stropped backed into the police cruiser he was operating.
The accident occurred on Commercial Parkway just before 8:30 p.m. as Sgt. Ramey was directing his efforts to combat intoxicated drivers over the holiday weekend as part of a Department of Transportation funded DUI Comprehensive Grant Program.
The operator, Crystal Carreras (DOB 11/10/1992) of 125 Montoya Dr. Branford was subsequently arrested for Operating While Under The Influence of Alcohol, Under 21 after responding officers determined she was intoxicated while operating the vehicle.
Chief Kevin Halloran said that his agency remains committed to removing intoxicated drivers and reducing DUI crashes on Branford’s roadways. “Sergeant Ramey’s DUI efforts and the injury he sustained in this crash remind us of the dangers that intoxicated drivers pose to our society and the need for police to actively remove them.” Said Chief Halloran.
Sgt. Ramey was eventually transported to an area medical facility where he was treated and later released for minor injures to his back.
Carreras was released after she posted a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in New Haven Court on September 11, 2013.
