Norwich – Thayer’s Marine received approval Tuesday night for 11 zoning variances it needs before the business can apply for a major planned expansion at the corner of Falls Avenue and West Main Street.
The Zoning Board of Appeals approved variances for reductions or elimination of lot size requirements, parking, buffer strips and side yard setbacks at the urban waterfront property.
The project calls for building a new three-story building in between the existing boat showroom and retail store and the former Silverstar Athletic Club building, also purchased and renovated by the Thayer family. The new building would connect the others, providing a large ground-floor boat showroom and marine sales store, with additional retail on the second floor and apartments on the upper floors.
The project next would need a special permit, coastal site plan and project site plan approvals by the Commission on the City Plan, said Peter Davis, city director of planning and development.
Richard Thayer, Jr., general manager at Thayer’s Marine, said he hopes to have plans ready to submit by the Oct. 15 Commission on the City Plan meeting.
