New Haven - Phil Cohen threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns as the Valley Regional/Old Lyme cooperative football team opened its season with a 34-0 victory over Hyde in a Pequot Football Conference South Division game on Thursday.
Cohen completed 16 of 20 passes and threw TD passes to three different receivers - a 50-yarder to Justin Cheverier, a 17-yarder to Dave Peck and a 24-yarder to Chris Jean-Pierre. Two of those touchdown passes came in a 21-point second quarter that staked the Warriors to a 28-0 halftime lead.
"We've got to be happy with the win," Valley/OL coach Tim King said. "Hyde always has the kind of athletes that on any given play they can break it, so we really did a good job of shutting them down and contained (quarterback Dwayne) Hunter-Parker."
Hunter-Parker was limited to 57 yards on 14 carries.
Cheverier, who rushed for 74 yards on nine carries, gave Valley an early 7-0 lead on a 41-yard touchdown run, while Dan Figuenick added a 1-yard TD run and Jared Roache converted four of five extra points.
Defensively, Chris Chiappa had three sacks and a fumble recovery while Figuenick and Jean-Pierre added interceptions.
"Offensively, we didn't block well up front," King said. "We made lot of mistakes and that shouldn't happen because we have a pretty experienced line. ... but beating Hyde anytime is a huge start for us."
