Griswold at East Lyme
Records: Griswold (1-0); East Lyme (0-1)
Last week: Griswold defeated St. Bernard/Norwich Tech, 26-0; Middletown defeated East Lyme, 41-14
Outlook: A big night in East Lyme. The first football game on the newly turfed field and the home debut for new coach Rudy Bagos. The Vikings played one of the state's best teams in their opener.
Stonington at Fitch
Records: Stonington (0-0); Fitch (0-1)
Last week: Stonington was idle; LaSalle Academy (R.I.) defeated Fitch, 62-26
Outlook: This is the battle of Mystic between a pair of Fitch graduates. Stonington coach A.J. Massengale played at Fitch in the 90s, roughly 10 years before Fitch coach Jordan Panucci played there. This is Panucci's home debut. ... Stonington, the defending ECC Small Division champ, moves to the ECC Medium this season and gets to open with a team from the ECC Large.
Waterford at Killingly
Records: Waterford (0-1); Killingly (1-0)
Last week: Platt defeated Waterford, 41-13; Killingly defeated Tolland, 44-14
Outlook: Happier news for Waterford: Killingly isn't nearly as talented or athletic as Platt. Not so good news: The Redmen were quite impressive in a win over Tolland. This is the Medium Division opener for both teams.
Woodstock at St. Bernard/Norwich Tech
Records: Woodstock (0-0); St. Bernard/Norwich Tech (0-1, 0-1 ECC Small Division)
Last week: Woodstock was idle; St. Bernard/Norwich Tech lost to Griswold, 26-0
Outlook: Difficult game to call. Both programs have struggled in recent memory. The Saints, under new coach Sean Ladyga, at least played a game last week. Perhaps that's enough to get the victory this week.
Coginchaug at Valley/Old Lyme
Records: Coginchaug (1-0, 1-0 Pequot North); Valley/OL (1-0, 1-0)
Last week: Coginchaug defeated SMSA/University 48-38; Valley/OL defeated Hyde-New Haven, 34-0
Outlook: Valley/OL wasted no time proving it would be a Pequot force this year as it won at perennial power Hyde last Thursday, 34-0. Phil Cohen threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns and Justin Cheverier ran for 74 yards and a score and caught another. Chris Chiappa added three sacks and a fumble recovery. QB Tyler Meeker and running back Jake Ober paced the Blue Devils to their win over SMSA last week.
Montville at NFA (1 p.m.)
Records: Montville (0-1); NFA (0-0)
Last week: Windham defeated Montville, 33-20; NFA was idle
Outlook: Montville had difficulty stopping Windham's Wing-T last week. This won't be easier. NFA, ranked fourth in The Day's state coaches' poll, opens its season with one of the most potent offenses in the state. Boston College-bound running back Marcus Outlow and junior Khaleed Exum-Strong pose more problems than Windham's impressive stable of backs did last week.
Ledyard at Bacon Academy (2 p.m.)
Records: Ledyard (1-0); Bacon (0-1)
Last week: Ledyard defeated RHAM, 42-6; Newington defeated Bacon, 52-22
Outlook: Ledyard's aspirations to win the ECC Medium Division begins here. The Colonels, who played well in their opener, see a team that had difficulty on defense last week. Ledyard's skill players, including running back JoJo Shumaker, shouldn't have many problems.
New London at Hartford Capital/Classical (6:30 p.m., Dillon Stadium)
Records: New London (1-0); Hartford Capital/Classical (1-0).
Last week: New London defeated Plainfield, 45-18; Hartford Capital/Classical defeated Platt Tech, 44-14
Outlook: Among the weekend's interesting games. The Whalers can score. But how will they contend with Capital/Classical fullback-linebacker Mike Jones, who is earning some impressive Division I looks? Capital/Classical was a Class S quarterfinalist last season.
