Walk Like MADD, the signature walk of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is coming to Branford Sat. Oct. 12.
Right now, MADD is looking for walkers, teams and Team Captains to join this 3- mile walk through the streets of downtown Branford to Branford Point. If you are interested in participating, or becoming a virtual walker, go to www.walklikemadd.org and locate Branford.
Each year, the walk is a fun, community-driven 5K event that raises funds and saves lives. Every step taken and every dollar raised supports MADD’s initiatives in CT, including the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving. The campaign calls for ignition interlocks for all drunk drivers; sobriety checkpoints and/or saturation patrols; community support; and the development and exploration of advanced technologies that will one day make a vehicle inoperable by a drunk driver.
The Oct. 12 event will open for registration at 8:30 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10 a.m., stepping off from Branford Town Hall on the green. MADD encourages family and friends to come out and enjoy the festive walk atmosphere, with fall-decorated tents, kids' face painting, tables of food and drink, pumpkin painting and the MADD Marketplace vendors.
According to information supplied by MADD, drunk driving is the nation’s most frequently committed violent crime. In 2011, 92 people were killed in Connecticut in drunk driving crashes. Nationally, MADD served over 50,000 victims/survivors and money raised through the Walk Like MADD helps to provide victim support services at no cost to the victim/survivors.
