On Tuesday Connecticut voters will go the polls to choose candidates for federal and state office.

Between incumbent President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, voters face a stark choice in governing philosophies. The candidates have major differences concerning the role of the federal government, tax policy, and whether to push forward or repeal the landmark Affordable Care Act, to name a few.

The election outcome will determine control of the U.S. Senate, with polls favoring the Democrats retaining their majority, but with the outcome uncertain. One of the Senate races the nation will closely be watching is the Connecticut contest to fill the seat Sen. Joe Lieberman is vacating. Congressman Chris Murphy, the Democrat, faces Republican Linda McMahon, a former professional wrestling executive who has invested her fortune in the race.

By most accounts Republicans should maintain control of the House, but in eastern Connecticut the Democratic incumbent, Rep. Joe Courtney, is heavily favored to retain his 2nd Congressional District seat in his race against Republican challenger Paul Formica, the first selectman of East Lyme.

At the state level most political observers expect Democrats to hold on to their majorities in both the House and Senate, though they could see their numbers erode. It is the first election since the Democratic majority, working in concert with Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, pushed through large tax increases to help close a $3.5 billion fiscal shortfall. Republicans have tried to capitalize on the unpopularity of the tax hikes and Election Day will show how successful they have been.

Over the last two weeks The Day has offered its endorsements for voter consideration. The following is a recap of those recommendations.

In the Norwich referendum to approve borrowing of $33.4 million for construction of a new police station, The Day advises a no vote. In the Town of Groton, we urge voters to vote yes and approve $11.2 million in bonding for road repairs, while in the City of Groton we recommend a yes vote on the proposed charter changes.

In the 18th state Senate District, we endorse Democratic incumbent Sen. Andrew Maynard. In the 19th Senate District, our choice is Catherine Ann Osten, the Democrat. In the 20th Senate District we recommend the incumbent Democrat Sen. Andrea Stillman, and in the 33rd Senate District, Green Party candidate Melissa Schlag.

In the 23rd House race we urge voters to return incumbent Republican Rep. Marilyn Giuliano to Harford, while in the 38th District our choice is Rep. Betsy Ritter, the Democrat. In the 39th District we recommend voters return Rep. Ernest Hewett, a Democrat, to office.

In the 40th House contest our nod goes to Republican Andrew Lavery; in the 41st District to Republican Harry Watson; and in the 42nd District to Republican Mike France.

In the 46th House race our choice is Democrat Emmett Riley; in the 47th District Democrat Brian H. Sear; and in the 139th House race the incumbent Democrat Rep. Kevin Ryan.

In the races for federal office The Day endorsed Rep. Joe Courtney for Congress in the 2nd District; Chris Murphy for Senate; and President Barack Obama.
